The winter solstice marks the longest night of the year. Less light, cold days and the busy holiday season can leave some folk feeling exhausted and down. Holiday eating and partying can leave one feeling sluggish. This article contains aromatherapy recipes for combating winter stress and blues.
Stress may result in tiredness, headaches, insomnia, depression, infections, anxiety, high blood pressure and prolonged stress can lead to chronic conditions. The following oils are well suited to help reduce the impact of stress.
Essential Oils to Reduce Physical Stress:
Rosemary, roman chamomile, marjoram, lavender, bergamot, thyme, geranium, fennel
Essential Oils to Reduce Mental Stress:
Geranium, lavender, sandalwood, basil, bergamot, grapefruit, cardamom, patchouli
Essential Oils to Reduce Emotional Stress:
Geranium, sandalwood, palma rosa, bergamot, vetiver, rose, cardamom
Aromatherapy Recipe Blends
General Use Blends:
Blend 1- 7 drops neroli, 3 drops lavender, 20 drops lemon
Blend 2- 9 drops bergamot, 11 drops geranium, 10 drops ginger
Depression/Guilt Blend:
15 drops geranium, 5 drops lavender, 10 drops bergamot
Anxiety Blend:
10 drops lavender, 10 drops geranium, 10 drops palma rosa
Insomnia Blend:
9 drops marjoram, 8 drops vetiver, 14 drops lemon
Tiredness Blend:
10 drops lemon, 5 drops clary-sage, 15 drops lavender
Digestive Problem Blend:
15 drops coriander, 10 drops grapefruit, 5 drops cypress
Muscular Pain Blend:
10 drops lavender, 5 drops rosemary, 15 drops cypress
Aches and Chills Blend:
10 drops lavender, 15 drops ginger, 5 drops cardamom
Low Immunity Blend:
10 drops vetiver, 10 drops lavender, 10 drops geranium
It is not recommended to place undiluted essential oils directly onto the skin. Dilute the above blends in 2 ounces (60ml) or 4 tablespoons of a carrier oil to make a massage blend. For a room spray dilute the recipe blend in 2-3 ounces of water and shake before each use. The blends may be added to a bath. Use 6-8 drops of the blend added to a full tub. A simple to use alternative is to place a couple of drops on a tissue, cotton ball or handkerchief and place in your environment or smell directly from the bottle.
