Beltane Activities — Making Garlands and Walking the Property Line

Beltane Activities

Two activities to celebrate Beltane include making garlands and walking your property line.
Garlands of flowers and wreaths of flowers were popular adornment for young men and women adorning themselves to dance around the maypole.  Beltane is a day for fertility rites, light-hearted celebration and sexual revelry.  The Goddess and God join together and consummate their union among revelry and in uninhibited delight.   Flowers, flower wreaths and garlands are typical decorations for this holiday, as well as ribbons and streamers. Flowers are a crucial symbol of Beltane, signifying the victory of Summer over Winter and the blossoming of sensuality in all of nature and the bounty it will bring.   Most May Day customs and celebrations revolve around flowers and green branches.  May Birching or Boughing for example involves  flowers woven into wreaths, hung on doors, placed in baskets or exchanged between those whom have a love interest in one another.

Another Beltane tradition is to walk your boundary or property line to invoke protection.  Entire
villages would perform this warding ritual, walking clockwise around the boundary, invoking help from the Goddesses and Gods to protect themselves, families, animals and property.
If you live in a house, walk your property line, leaving a trail of salt to act as a barrier.  If you live in apartment, you can walk the interior of your home, again leaving a salt barrier.  Just a few grains is sufficient, though outside you will want to leave a larger salt line.  See the barrier reaching far into the sky and into the earth.  You can ring a bell, beat a drum or simply chant a protection.   Add shields around your house as well as your property, shielding the exterior, then inside the outside layers, then the exterior and interior walls, windows, doors, roof and floor.  When you are done you will have five layers of protection around your home.  Remember to reinforce your shields at least weekly for maximum effectiveness.
