Magickal and Healing properties of Marjoram



Marjoram is synonymous with oregano, and therefore the names sweet marjoram and knotted marjoram are used to distinguish it from other plants of the genus Origanum. it is a perennial evergreen shrub of which there are three main varieties: wild, sweet and pot. Oregano Origanum vulgare, sometimes listed with marjoram as Origanum majorana) is also called wild marjoram It comes from the Greek words “oros” which means mountain and “ganos” which translates as joy or happiness.  It grows in Europe, North America and Asia and likes a dry, limey, chalky soil preferably in a sunny spot.

Marjoram is connected with the element of air and the planet Mercury. It has been used as far back as Greek, Roman and Egyptian days.

It can be used in magick in various ways: grieving, happiness, love, money, protection, psychic development, psychic protection, and tranquility.

Marjoram has been used in wedding rituals and in love spells so for example, you could place a small amount around a pink candle in spells for love.

You could use in cooking for making a meal that is shared with you and the one you love to enhance the love between you.

Marjoram can help to create a happy home atmosphere for all the family.

Marjoram is believed to protect from harm and so you can sprinkle it around the house to deflect evil intent.

You should vacuum it away at the New Moon and replace it with fresh herbs.

You could also place some of the herb in a small pouch and carry it around with you to protect you and prevent harm from reaching you.

Marjoram is also used to ease grief, sadness and mild depression.

A small amount of the herb could be carried about your person in a small sachet.  You could also use it in a bath by putting some in a small mesh bag under the tap whilst the water runs.  This should bring about a greater sense of peace.

The whole of the plant can be used in various ways medicinally:  

It can help to relieve spasms as it is calming and relaxing.  In this way it’s helpful for painful periods or for tension headaches.

Marjoram acts as an expectorant so can be useful in preparations taken internally for chest problems such as bronchitis.

It can be used in a gargle for sore throats or to ease catarrh by steam inhalation.

It can also be used externally in ointments to treat muscular pains, stiff joints and conditions such as arthritis, bruising and also chilblains as it is warming.

Marjoram is used in essential oils in aromatherapy.  Its other properties include being an analgesic, antiseptic, sedative and also restorative.

Whilst marjoram can be used to alleviate and improve many conditions it should not be used during pregnancy.
