I love folk magick! One of my favorite projects at the change of the season is to make a Haint Zapper! Now, depending on who is doing the explaining, a Haint has many definitions. Lee R. Gandee (Strange Experience – Secrets of a Hexenmeister) told me (yes, I knew him) that a Haint was a spirit of anger or great distress manufactured, once upon a time, by a human being. The emotion was so great that it became an energy on its own and so roams at twilight, zooming along the edges of hills where shadows begin to deepen. In Celebration of Earth Day I created several dream pillows with an embroidered world tree design. I built a bonfire in our ritual circle and used my rattle during meditation — asking what herbals I already had that would be good for bringing peace, healing, and good fortune to my hearthstone brothers and sisters and my family. I used the dream pillow design as my focus, breathing deeply and allowing the plants to step forward in my mind. It was such a delightful and surprising experience, as plants I never would have thought of working together filled my mind. I fed the bonfire and gave blessings to the plant world before hurrying into the house to work on what I dreamt.

Our weather has been unseasonably cold, so we have been setting our new veggie plants out during the day and then bringing them in at night. We’ve been doing the same thing with our wintered house plants — the patchouli, basil (who absolutely, positively hates the cold), and a few others. Luckily, the peas are still going strong!
In honor of Earth Day on 22 April, which is also a New Moon in Taurus, our challenge today is: Celebrate the Earth!
Choose any activity that you feel honors the Earth! This could be an Earth Mother ritual, taking care of your house plants, working in the garden (weather permitting), cleaning out bird feeders, or helping a senior citizen with their yard work, etc. Earn 100 stars!
