The forsythia belongs to the olive tree family and comes in one color only – yellow!  There are just 11 species of forsythia and it is mainly native to Asia but there is one species in Europe.  It was introduced to the western world from China in the nineteenth century, being named after William Forsyth who was an English gardening expert.

The forsythia can grow to a height of around 10 feet and prefers full sun or partial shade and moist, well-drained soil.  The flowers come out before the leaves do so at the start of spring it just looks like a bare bush with not much going on.  The flowers then start to grow and bloom and they are followed by the green leaves.  It is probably one of the first shrubs to greet the spring, coming out in March when many others are not yet ready to trust that spring truly has arrived. With its beautiful vibrant yellow flowers forsythia is the ideal plant to herald the arrival of spring.

The forsythia is a symbol of hope, anticipation and reassurance for the spring. It speaks of cheerfulness and sunshine.

The forsythia is often used in Chinese medicine and indeed has been used for over 3000 years. It has antiviral, antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties and so can be useful to treat flu and colds and can also be effective against allergies.  The fruit of the forsythia contains oleanolic acid and has been used to treat respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, chest pain and fevers.  You can drink a tea made with forsythia at the first signs of cold or flu. It can be mixed with lemon and you will probably find forsythia teas mixed with honeysuckle. Forsythia has also been used to cure ear infections.

Forsythia can be used in your magickal work to release ingrained habits and patterns and move forwards to more positive ones.  It can also represent patience and the victory of belief and perseverance.
