Citrine the “Merchant’s Stone”

Citrine is the yellow to gold to orange color of quartz. Its name comes from the French for lemon, citron, though citron tends to be more golden than lemon yellow. Deposits of natural-colored citrine are found principally in Brazil and Madagascar, as well as in Burma, the USA and Namibia. Many of the stones on the market are created from Amethyst Crystals by heat treatment. Virtually all heat-treated citrines have a reddish tint.

Citrine gets its color from traces of iron present when the quartz crystal was formed. The difference between Citrine and Amethyst is only the oxidation state of the iron impurities present in the quartz. When amethyst is heated it becomes citrine, because the iron present will oxidize further because of the heat and cause the purple color to fade and become yellow to reddish orange (citrine), green, or colorless depending on the site and the original oxidation of the iron present and depending on the amound and duration of the heat applied. Keep your citrine in a safe, dark location when not wearing as it can permanently change color if left in the sunlight or near heat sources. It also scratches easy so take care when wearing not to bump it against anything hard.
