Solo Surfboards: Bringing boards back to wood basics
Surfing is a pastime and a way of life reserved for some in life and Solo Surfboards founder Luca Bressan is combining his love of surf with nature by focusing his efforts on designing environmentally wooden surfboards.
Solo Surfboards are natural and lightweight surfboards made from wood, linseed oil and natural based glue.
Fuerteventura-based Bressan explained: “My boards are made of wood and natural materials, because I care about the oceans and wildlife. My research is focused on creating high performance surfboards using the best from nature, increasing strength and long-lasting the life of a board.”
The product designer has built a variety of surfboards from natural materials in various shapes, including the Winter Fish and Fish surfboards, structured around the silhouette of fish.
Bressan is one of a new breed of surf types championing the production of eco-friendly surfboards.
Taking it back to basics – surfboards were originally made of wood before styrofoam and fiberglass came on the scene – Bressan declares that wood is part of his “cultural heritage” having grown up near the mountains of northern Italy, not far from the Mediterranean Sea.
He added: “I concentrate every energy on finding a way to make a surfboard 100% natural, durable, very light and very strong.”
