Witchgrass

Witchgrass is also known as dog’s grass, crouch grass and quick grass. It’s known as witchgrass because of its fuzzy panicle growing above the rest of the plant and with a pointed end a bit like a witch’s broom; as dog’s grass because sick dogs would dig up the root and eat it and quick grass because it grows quickly and is considered to be an invasive weed.

It is a perennial that grows in Australia, America, Northern Asia and Europe. Witchgrass provides a mass of grass with hair like leaves and straight flower spikes which are around 4” to 7” long. The flowers which bloom from June to September are hermaphroditic and self-pollinating. Witchgrass seems to like all kinds of soil, being able to thrive in both acid and alkaline soil and both wet and dry.

Witchgrass has been used for its health benefits since Roman and Greek times when it was used to address urinary and kidney issues. It is still used today. It’s an expectorant, diuretic and antibacterial. The roots are used to make teas and it can be taken in liquid and tincture form. Whilst witchgrass is used to treat urinary and kidney ailments it also has other uses and can assist with a wide variety of problems such as colds, coughs, catarrh, bronchitis, sore throats, fevers, constipation, rheumatism and back pain. It can also be used externally to treat swollen limbs.

Witchgrass can also be of assistance to the magick user and incorporated into spells concerning love and exorcism. It is associated with Jupiter and has a masculine aspect. If you’re looking to attract love into your life or liven up an existing relationship then after you’ve created your magical spell you could keep the witchgrass you’ve used in a pouch under the bed. You can also carry it about your person. Witch grass is believed to assist in exorcism and getting rid of any unwanted entities or negative energies. It can be placed around the house, particularly near the doorway to ward off any negativity. It is also believed it can help to dispel depression when carried about the person. It may be possible to also use a tincture.
