Scrying for Beginners
It is said that Samhain is one of the best times to do divination so this Samhain try your talent for scrying. It is best done at night. You can use your cauldron for this. a black cauldron or black bowl works best for this. Fill the cauldron about two thirds full with water. Scrying takes time so be prepared to sit and focus, this may be done inside your circle or you may choose to not use a circle, if you do not use a circle then be sure to do a simple purification ritual before you begin.
You want your bowl or cauldron in a position where it does not reflect the candle light or any light. You want to make sure all reflection are blocked so check carefully before you start that nothing is reflected in the cauldron or bowl. It would not do to have an outside object interfere with the surface of the water. Make your self comfortable because you may be sitting for a while. Scrying can be done with or without intent. Without intent means you can sit and scry allowing any vision that are granted to you.
Scrying with intent means you can ask a question and look to your scrying to show you an answer. If you are seeking information on a particular subject ask your question aloud as you sit before your bowl or cauldron. Hold only your question in your mind. Do not allow your thoughts to wander to other things. [This may take practice but it is a necessary skill for all magic users to master] What you can expect to see as you focus on the surface of the water is the gradual appearance of shapes developing in or on the surface or the water. At first they may appear as cloudy or foggy, they may appear to be out of focus. Focus on the images but do not try to force it, do not move your head or try to get closer to what you are seeing to clear up the focus. This is the time to remain calm and keep your thoughts still and you may be rewarded with a vision. Do not despair if you do not get a vision on your first try. Give it a bit of time[several days] and then try again.
With practice, scrying using your cauldron or a bowl will pay off for you. Water is one of the best mediums for scrying and you need not restrict your self to the bowl or cauldron. Any still surface of water may be used for scrying. Of course you may also use crystal balls or glass bottles with water. Simply follow the above directions and your practice will pay of as your scrying efforts begin bringing you answers to your questions. You may also try working with a scrying mirror. The technique is a bit different, there are books a plenty with more information on using a scrying mirror or a crystal ball. Be sure to pour the water out of your bowl or cauldron, make sure it is clean and dry. Especially if you are using a cast iron cauldron for your scrying. –
