Geology: Smoky quartz rates 7 on Mohs scale of hardness. It is clear quartz that has been naturally irradiated by the earth. Most smoky quartz comes from Brazil. Very dark smoky quartz can be found in Scotland and Colorado. Some clear quartz stones are artificially irradiated and sold as smoky quartz. Those stones are often very dark to black and do not have the properties of a true smoky quartz. When heated smoky quartz loses its color and becomes clear.

Physical Uses: Dark smoky quartz is found in Scotland in the Cairngorm Mountains and is called Cairngorm. It is used in Scottish dirks and brooches and a large one can be found in the tip of the Royal Scottish scepter. Use smoky quartz to detoxify the body. It works on the kidneys, liver and other organs of elimination to energetically remove toxins. Associated with the root chakra, it can help to ground a person in the physical plane. Use it to assist survival instincts and dissolve illnesses. Place by electronics to deflect electromagnetic frequencies.

Spiritual Uses: It helps to repel negative energy. Use it for protection when performing magic and rituals. Assists in meditation to ground and center oneself. Set the crystal around the house to neutralize negative energy. Use it to remove unwanted people or things from your life.

Mental Uses: Smoky quartz can be used to dispel negative thoughts and dissolve problems. It aids in realigning scattered energy including a scattered mind and in eliminating doubt and worry. Helps to overcome indecision and to become firm about what you do and do not want.
