Green Light New Orleans has been instrumental in engaging residents of the city in sustainable practices for over than 10 years.
A dedicated team of volunteers have installed free energy efficient light bulbs, rain barrels and backyard vegetable gardens in homes across the city. The scheme offers New Orleans residents tools that can save money on recurring costs and reduce their own carbon footprint.
Green Light New Orleans was founded by Swiss-born musician Andreas Hoffman in 2006 to assist in the sustainable rebuilding of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Since then, over 27,000 homes in the city have had energy efficient light bulbs fitted.
Around 550 vegetable gardens and 100 rain barrels, at a small charge to residents, have also been installed since launching the programs.
