Autumn Equinox 2017

Autumn 2017

Mabon, Autumn Equinox, fall, this is one of my favorite times of the year. Autumn like spring is usually a time of moderate temperatures and amazing colors where I live. As I write this the trees are still quite green but the sumac is beginning to turn and the ferns are also turning and the temperature is 91 degrees. The colors of autumn so vibrant and bright makes it difficult to accept that nature is preparing to slumber. There are so many things that can be enjoyed this time of year.

Some of my favorite autumn activities take me back to my younger days. The difference is I pick grapes and apples that I can reach standing on the ground or the lower rungs of a ladder instead of climbing the tree or hanging precariously from the top rung of the ladder. I harvest the dried herbs, seeds and nuts that grow naturally in the forest, again it is now done with caution and if I hear something rustling in the dried grass I choose not to go see what it is. Yep you guessed it I am a country girl, and I could not be living in a better place to enjoy all that nature offers especially the beauty.

Today I am sitting in my favorite chair writing this. It is my favorite chair because it allows me to have a panoramic view of the trees around my house. Also from here the trees and the bird feeders are all that I can see. So for the time that I am sitting here it is as if there are no other people around, just nature and I. I will have to wait a few more weeks before I can begin my autumn activities, but for now I can indulge in happy anticipation. I can watch the leaves change colors, the Poplar tree which dropped cotton like catkins in the spring will give me a beautiful pale yellow leaf to view. My maples will give every shade from brightest red to brilliant gold. Yes autumn allows one to harvest not just crops as nature’s bounty but we also get to harvest nature’s beauty as well. So go leaf peeking take lots of pictures collect the color and decorate your indoors with some of nature’s beauty.
