Brixton residents are the proud new owner of The People’s Fridge, London’s first ever community fridge.

The community fridge, located at Pop Brixton in south London, was set up by a group of local volunteers who want to help cut food waste and encourage food sharing.

Local restaurants, retailers and residents donate food to The People’s Fridge allowing for surplus food to reach neighbours who need or simply want it.

The People’s Fridge was part of a crowdfunding campaign, which passed its £1,000 target in just three days and went on to raise a total of £2,270.

Community fridges can already be found in countries including Spain, Germany and India. In the UK, there are also schemes in Somerset and Derbyshire.
