The Paper Magician

The Paper Magician (The Paper Magician Trilogy, #1)The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this book immensely. The characters were interesting and well rounded. Ceony, who had graduated at the top of her class at Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined had hopes of learning to be-spell metal. Instead she is apprenticed to Magician Emery Thane. Ceony is to learn paper magic, and once she is bonded with one material she will not be able to work with any other. She begins her apprenticeship with a broken heart and broken dreams, missing her dog and wondering what use is paper magic. She soon learns that there is more to paper magic than just decorations. She learns to animate stories and create paper birds that fly. She also learns there is more to Magician Emery Thane than she originally thought. She learned fortune telling with a great degree of accuracy. When her fortune told of an adventure she could not think what kind of adventure a paper magician’s apprentice could possibly have. But then she was not aware of magician who practiced flesh magic until one stole Magician Emery Thane’s beating heart from his chest. From that point Ceony must put all she has learned into practice.

It is a well written story that holds my attention from start to finish. It is written to appeal to the young adult reader but a good read for the more mature reader as well.
