Beating the Holiday Blues

Beating the Holiday Blues

The holidays can be a trying time for many people. It is the darkest time of the year and that alone can affect mood, such as in Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). For other people it may create feelings of sadness especially if significant others are not present or have died. Emotions and stress may run high. What can you do to beat the holiday blues?

The commonsense things your mother may have told you such as eating healthy and getting a good night’s sleep go a long way in keeping your mood upbeat. Exercise is known to increase the feel good chemicals in the body. Smiling and laughter similarly have been associated with changing body chemistry to the brighter side.

A common response when feeling depressed is to withdraw and isolate. Even though you may not feel like being around people, commit to go out with family or friends. Join a group event whether it is holiday related or not. There are meditation groups, bereavement groups, walking clubs, book clubs and so many more. Talk with others. Touch also aids depression. Give a hug. Get a massage.

Feeling blue and being depressed is associated with the heart. Practice heart opening techniques. Start a gratitude journal. Gratitude is associated with higher life satisfaction. Compliment others especially those you may not want to compliment. Practice a random act of kindness by helping another. Get a pet. Caring and loving another being opens the heart. Make or write positive statements. Read an inspirational book.

There are many techniques and natural products to help beat the blues. Acupuncture, Chi Gong, Tai Chi, Reiki, flower essences, herbs, homeopathy and essential oils are some of the many choices. Below are 2 aromatherapy options to ease your sadness.
