No.5: Miraval Resort & Spa
Miraval Resort & Spa – the idyllic wellness resort situated in the warm shade of the Santa Catalina Mountains in northern Tucson, Arizona – is probably the most well-known health and well-being resort given its award-winning accolades over its 20-year history, which includes Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Destination Spas and ranked in the Top 10 for Best Eco-Spa in SpaFinder Wellness 365 Readers’ Choice Awards.
Built upon eco-friendly principles and utilizing sustainable materials wherever possible, Miraval Resort & Spa pays homage and respect to its surrounding desert and mountain landscape with a focus on merging the elements throughout the resort, be it through design, art, architecture, resources and well-being.
Luxurious it may be – with its wondrously landscaped grounds and 116 casually elegant casita-style luxury spa accommodations and suites – but the Miraval Resort & Spa is beautifully designed and executed in such a way that it is in balance and harmony with its natural surroundings, and there is nothing decadent or ostentatious about this luxury resort.
In a similar vein, the state-of-the-art spa – the Miraval Life in Balance Spa – is not about excess but an efficient use of natural resources, products and furnishings made from sustainable materials. A sensual combination of design and natural elements stir the senses as you approach the spa from the resort. The walkway to the spa leads to a long reflecting pool of water which reflects the Arizona sky, where you are also greeted by the heavenly scent of sage, wild lavender and deer grass. An intimate view of the Catalina Mountains, fortifying in its beautiful simplicity is on view from a plush chaise, the ever-changing sunset reflected on the huge glazed wall. In the evening, a fire bowl is lit to add to the harmonious atmosphere.
The massive stucco walls of the spa are colored the rich tone of mesquite bark, blending into the desert. A huge glass wall offers spectacular views of the Catalina Mountains. To the side of the reception desk, light flickers mysteriously, casting shadows over a graphite glass wall, from a lit water trough at its base. A vast corridor lined with aged reclaimed cedar leads to the spa treatment rooms.
The spa features saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, a private garden and a VIP Spa Suite for those wanting privacy on a special retreat. A unique spa menu offers specialist treatments such as Ayurvedic treatment and a Naga Thai Massage, which involves a therapist using strands of richly colored silk to release restrictions in the body.
The Miraval Resort & Spa is an ode to sustainable design and architecture. It is a refreshing take on luxury which makes it comfortable and accessible to all. Something unique in the way of luxury resorts, the Miraval offers a “Miraval Gives Back” scheme which aims to help those most in need of a weekend of wellness – those facing challenging, life-altering events, but lacking the resources to book a stay. Recipients, who are nominated by friends or family, are able to participate in a range of fitness classes, outdoor activities, meditative sessions and innovative spa services to heal themselves both physically and emotionally.
