Late summer signals a return to school for many children and adults.  Enter any store and the signs are everywhere.  Returning back to school comes with challenges. For some folks school requires awakening early, for others it includes night classes.  All students must stay alert, study and take exams.  There are new classes, subjects and teachers to incorporate.  The brain may become overstimulated and the body stressed.  Aromatherapy can assist in bringing balance to a busy school year.

Essential oils that promote a wakeful state include citrus and mint oils.  Lemon, lime, peppermint and spearmint can help you or your child get up and moving.  Other stimulating oils that facilitate alertness, mental clarity, memory, concentration and/or focus include black pepper, thyme, rosemary, basil, eucalyptus and grapefruit.

The aroma of sandalwood, vanilla, lavender, chamomile, mandarin, marjoram, frankincense and Clary sage can help to alleviate nervous tension, anxiety, worry and/or insomnia.  A 2008 study involving intensive care unit nurses demonstrated a decreased perception of stress after receiving a topical application of lavender and Clary sage essential oils.

Aromatherapy Recipes:

Concentration Blends

Blend 20 drops lemon, 6 drops basil and 2 drops rosemary essential oil and diffuse into the air.

Blend 5 drops spearmint and 10 drops grapefruit essential oil and diffuse into the air.

Memory Recall Synergy Blend-

Apply to a potpourri burner, aroma lamp or tissue 5 drops lemon, 3 drops basil, 2 drops rosemary essential oil.

Sailing Through Interview and Exam Blend-

Add 8 drops grapefruit, 5 drops basil, 5 drops bergamot, 2 drops lavender essential oil.  Mix the oils into a concentrate and use 6 drops in a bath prior to the interview or exam or 3 drops on a washcloth and rub over your body in the shower.

Under 16 Pre-Exam Blend-

Add 2 drops grapefruit and 1 drop lavender essential oil in a bath the day of the exam.

Sweet Dreams Blend-

Add 2 drops chamomile, 6 drops geranium, 4 drops sandalwood and 3 drops lemon essential oil to a spray bottle.  Add 4 ounces distilled water and make a room mister or add drops directly to bath and soak in tub.

Peaceful Sleep Blend-

Add 14 drops lavender, 4 drops marjoram, 2 drops clary sage essential oil to a spray bottle and add 4 ounces of distilled water to make a room mister.  Shake before use.
