Traditional French gypsy wagons or roulottes have found a new, permanent home within a wildflower meadow in the heart of the Scottish Borders.
Shivanni, the most standout of the seven exquisitely decorated roulottes at Roulotte Retreat, is a Himalayan-inspired wagon adorned with hand-carved designs, and painted in blue and gold, using eco-friendly paints where possible.
Conjuring up the spirit of magic, romance, colour and nature, Shivanni is an ideal romantic getaway for a couple that want to be in nature yet stay somewhere unique.
A beautiful salon, complete with Indian daybed, double bed, wood burning stove, kitchenette and washroom, Shivanni is a quaint and quirky stay for those that want a base in the Scottish Borders, from where they can reach for the stars at night.
Located on the edge of a village, Melrose, at the front of the Eildon Hills, Roulotte Retreat goes all the way when it comes to providing its holidaymakers with eco-friendly facilities.
Self-confessed “true adventurers”, Avril and Alan, who have created this truly bohemian retreat, have planted an abundance of native trees and hedging around the site encouraging wildlife and increasing biodiversity.
The roulottes, two of which even come with eco-hot tubs, are heated using eco logs, and much of the furniture that is built into the roulottes are on their second life, having been sourced especially by the owners from different places. There’s retro BBQs outside each roulotte for al fresco dining, and you can grab some herbs, which grow outside the roulottes, to season your din dins.
