Benzoin Essential Oil Recipes

Benzoin essential oil is a thick resinous oil native to the Styrax benzoin tree of the Stryracaceae family in Sumatra, Thailand and Java. Beneficial for calming nerves, aiding circulation and relieving respiratory disorders benzoin has traditionally been a classic ingredient in incense. Benzoin is widely used as a fixative in perfumes today. The aroma is sweet, warm, rich and vanilla-like.

The resin of the benzoin tree is extracted through deep incisions in the trunk. Sap drains from the cut, becomes hardened and is then collected from the bark. Solvent extraction is used to make the oil. The therapeutic properties of benzoin oil are: antiseptic, anti-depressant, astringent, anti-inflammatory, carminative (gas relieving), cordial (invigorating), deodorant, diuretic (promotes excretion of urine); expectorant, sedative and vulnerary (assists in wound healing).

The oil of benzoin is a stimulant and aids in the relief of depression. Other uses for benzoin include: stress relief, anxiety, insomnia, toxic waste elimination, respiratory congestion and infection, blood circulation stimulation, arthritis, muscle pain, wound healing, eczema and gas relief.

Benzoin oil blends well with resinous, wood and citrus oils. Frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood, sandalwood, bergamot, lemon, orange, rose, petitgrain, juniper, lavender and coriander are complimentary oils.
